Join us for a night of wipeouts, waves and wetsuits! On Thursday, May 24, Aquarium of the Bay will be hosting An Evening of Surfing Films. This event is part of the America's Cup Healthy Ocean Project Film and Lecture Series which features a year-round calendar or topic-specific films and lectures. Each event is designed to engage the public, raise awareness and celebrate the beauty of our Bay, our ocean and our planet by focusing on key issues affecting each of these fragile ecosystems.
Four talented filmmakers will share their visions on the big screen. Hosting this surfing event is Grant Washburn, whose name is synonymous with big-wave surfing as a Maverick’s test pilot, ocean enthusiast, documentarian and surfer extraordinaire. Before the films, guests may mingle and enjoy a wine reception. A question and answer session with filmmakers and local Maverick’s surfers will follow the screening.
Films will include:
- Waste to Waves–features Sustainable Surf’s new program for recycling waste materials into more eco-friendly surfing products.
- Ice Board–tells the story of director Conn Bertish’s remarkable visual creation, the Ice Board. In this film, watch as Bertish sculpts a life-sized surfboard entirely from ice in an endeavor to highlight the plight of our oceans.
- Day of Jay’s–a film tribute to Maverick’s surfer Jay Moriarity (1978-2001), and features behind-the-scenes action from last year’s Maverick’s season.
- Minds in the Water–an awardwinning documentary, following professional surfer Dave Rastovich from Australia to the Galapagos, Tonga, California, Alaska and Japan as he strives to activate his community to help protect the ocean and its inhabitants.
