These diverse animals are key to the health of marine ecosystems, but today they face many challenges in the wild. Marine debris, noise pollution, and overfishing are making it difficult for marine mammals to survive, but there are many steps we can take to protect them. Join us to learn how you can do your part!

    Explore the different types of sounds created by whales and dolphins, and learn how we are changing their environment and affecting the ways they communicate.
  • 11:30 am – Eco-craft Demonstration
    Find out how you can turn trash to treasure by making a re-usable bag from an old T-shirt.
  • 12:15 pm – Sea Lions 101
    An introduction to California sea lions, and how they came to be PIER 39’s most famous residents.
  • 1:15pm – Sea Otters – Key to the Kelp Forest
    Familiarize yourself with the dynamics of California’s coastal kelp forests and how sea otters maintain these rich ecosystems.
  • 2:00 pm – What’s for Dinner? A Squid Dissection
    Learn about the role that sea lions play in balancing the food web of the SF Bay.
  • 3:15 pm – Back to the Sea
    Discover how marine mammals came to inhabit the world’s oceans through millions of years of evolution.
